Anne and others will pass out flyers (written in English and Spanish) at the fireworks/ice cream gathering this evening to let the neighborhood know about the Tuesday Morning Activities for Children which will start on July 8th. Anne also had the lesson plans, books, and activities for us to look over. Each session will have a follow-up color story book for the children to take home and review with their families. For the first session Dan will bring his puppets to follow along with the creation story. Pastor Pam may bring her guitar and do the singing portion with the children. The lounge area will be where the parents can fill in the registration cards and have a doughnut and meet Pastor Pam. At the July 8th there will not be a lunch served but that may change depending on the numbers of students and if there is a need.
Anne next presented the binders that teachers will use for Vacation Church School that include the overview and suggestions for daily schedules and activities. On Monday, the Salvation Army will come to speak to the classes and also bring a kettle that will be left with us for the week that children can put their change into for the Salvation Army. The topic on Monday will be Pentecost and how we are to go out into the world and do good. On Tuesday, Katherine Parker will send the first of her 3 letters to the children. Her topics will include water, health and agriculture. Each day a candle will be lit at the Opening for Katherine. Wednesday, Pastor Pam will talk about Angola and their needs. On Thursday, Phil Maxwell is arranging for VCS to visit a farm. It will later be decided if the pre-school children will also go to the farm. Friday the students will pack health kits for Cambodia. These will be given to Katherine Parker when she comes back at Christmas time so that she can personally take them back to Cambodia and distribute the kits. On Friday each class will present a poster or skit for the parents and also at church on Sunday.
On Sunday, September 28th, Wesley will host an Open House following worship. Pastor Pam asked us to be thinking how we can share what we do in Sunday School. We may have 3 rooms, one for an activity, one for Bible stories, and one for sing-a-longs. It was decided that it was not the appropriate time for `Godly Play' as those in our congregation that might want to see it demonstrated would probably be involved with hosting duties and that since it was not a true representation of our current Sunday programs. It was suggested that the Youth have Oglesby opened and welcome guests and talk about what they do and perhaps a table for refreshments. It would also be nice if an Adult Class could do something also. If the nursery is open it was suggested that a digital camera could be used to take a photo of the parent with their child when they drop them off so that when the child is picked up, the parent can be matched with the correct child.
The calendar will be checked to see if there is perhaps a good date in October to hold a `Godly Play' demonstration.
The Youth Group has not been meeting regularly this summer and plan to do special activities but as of yet have done none. It was suggested that families of those in Youth Group could host an activity and a note could be in the Outlook and at Worship Service that volunteer hosts are needed for special activities. Activities could be held at Olgesby or at the host's choice of location such as bowling alley, swimming pool, etc.
Anne had planned to do all of July Narthex activities but now Jean Ann will do the 6th and Stella will do the 20th.
Pastor Pam will start the "Living the Questions" study July 9th.
Conference would like members to read a book by Dan Dick to assist with understanding their church's vitality. Conference would like it to be done by December 15th. Each of our Adult Classes will read the book. Anne will start the Thursday Morning group until Barbara Dethlefson returns.
