Christian Education Minutes from April 25, 2007

Present:  Barbara Dethlefson, Hank Webb, Caroline Close, Anne Scott, Jean Ann Lansche
Absent: Cindy Wilson, Nick Strobel, Lissy Hallum, Pastor Kimberly Willis

This meeting will be considered the April/May meeting.  We will not hold a Christian Education Meeting in June or July unless there is a need.  Anne Scott will be back towards the end of July or beginning of August.  It was decided that Anne will schedule a meeting with Pastor Pam for August 1st.  We will poll committee members to see what time will best fit our schedules.  This will be a good time for us to become acquainted with Pastor Pam and for her to learn about our group and education commitments that we are currently focused upon.

On June 2nd, Anne Scott will conduct a Vacation Church School Meeting.  Vacation Church School focus is "Caring for God's People" and will be held August 13th though the 17th.  Anne has the staff for the most part in place and is waiting on Mary and Alison Hanel, Jean Ann Lansche,  and Sherry Setser to see if their calendars free up for them to teach.  Anne has the daily themes, scriptures, schedules, guest speakers, field trips, Friday's luncheon and a play directed by Hank Webb arranged.   The play will be based on the Good Samaritan and presented at the luncheon  and on the following Sunday morning during the worship service by the 5/6 grade class and the jr. high class.  Margaret Grant will also be working with the classes on music to present at those times.   Pastor Pam along with her dog Buddy will be the Monday speakers.  Pastor Pam will also be on campus the other days and at the Friday luncheon.   Congregation members such as Jemima Rowe, Tom Larwood, Bob and Pat Pickard will also be visiting VCS to talk about missions.  On Wednesday, grades 1st and up will go to the Habitat House that is being built near Trinity Church.  (Note: 2008 Habitat House will have Youth build a house.)  Trinity Children will meet us there and will help Pators Maddy and Gabriela to take us  on a tour of their church.  We will have lunch there that day and possibly Trinity Church will host the snacks.    Jr. High and the 5th/6th grade classes will write articles for the Outlook about our week and the missions.   One of the missions is Methodists in Angola though Connection Outreach.  We may raise money for this which provides medical and school supplies as well as pastors by buying for example a mango tree for $20.  The luncheon will be based on Fishes and Loaves of Bread story and how if we all do a little bit we can together do great things.  With this the Pre-K will arrange the chips, the K class will make the lemonade, 1st/2nd will wash and cut the grapes, 3rd/4th will decorate and 5th/6th will bake cookies to add to the hot dog lunch.  The classes might make things for Stephen's Ministers and Pastor Pam to take when they visit the shut-ins or make hospital visits.

One Room Sunday School will start on June 3rd.  Anne has the materials  and will again have a sign up sheet for 2 adults to teach each Sunday after the Rummage Sale signs have been taken down.

There will be no Adult Sunday School classes during the summer.

Minutes correction: Anne did not have the confirmation materials as she was waiting to find out what Pastor Kimberly wanted ordered.  Now she will wait for Pastor Pam to let her know which materials she would like ordered.

Old Business:
We again discussed how nice the Taize Service is and how to get the word out to the groups under our umbrella as to attend.  It was decided that it should be mentioned to Freda Hamilton to make sure she announces the first Sunday of each month and that it should be brought to the attention of the Worship Service committee.

Bibles will be presented to the students in Jean Ann Lansche and Sherry Setsers class of 2nd through 5th graders on April 30th by Pastor Kimberly, Anne Scott, Jean Ann Lansche and Sherry Setser.  The students have been working hard learning how to use the Bible and are excited to be receiving their own Bibles.   Anne has talked with each of the students and their families to make sure they know to be at the Church Service as have Jean Ann and Sherry.  It was also decided that Stella Rous will send a envelope with a stamped card enclosed to Jon and Melinda Robisson in hopes of learning their new address and to let them know that we are praying for them in their new home.  If we learn of their new address then we will send them each a Bible.

Hank Webb and Anne Scott reported that the Youth Group went last Sunday to the Rescue Mission and were given a tour and told of the purpose of the Mission.  This coming Sunday the Youth will feed those at the Homeless Shelter.
The Youth are still having some discipline problems which they are working on.  They have written a statement of their Beliefs and have signed their names to the poster.
The Sign In sheet for Youth is not always remembered but they are working on remembering to do that.
Alternate times to meet during the summer is appropriate if the adults that have signed up to help with the group need to have the day changed.  Consistency on Sundays is preferred but we realize that if a leader has volunteered to help fill in and needs the day changed or that perhaps a movie or swim party outing another day might work better but will need to be posted and made sure that all know of the change.
Officers will most likely be elected in July and they will be in charge of sending out Thank You's, etc.  May 6th Nick and Lisa Strobel will be leading Youth Group.

Adult Classes continue to do well.  It was suggested by Anne and Caroline Close that the Thursday Morning class might enjoy the Disciple videos.  Anne or Caroline would be willing to lead the class until Barbara Dethlefson has returned and able to take over teaching the beginning of November.
Stella will  call Nick Strobel reguarding teaching a class in the fall.
